AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

Age-related macular degeneration (or age-related macular dystrophy, macular degeneration, AMD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the central part of the retina (macula), which is responsible for central vision.

AMD is the most common retinal disease and causes vision loss in 5.6% of worldwide cases in people aged 50 and older. Patients with AMD experience a significant deterioration in the quality of their life: they gradually lose the ability to read, write, drive and recognize faces.

Have you ever thought of taking care of your vision even before the first signs of vision loss appear? Then you need to undergo genetic testing and get recommendations from your ophthalmologist on a set of preventive measures. Timely prevention of AMD upon detection of a genetic predisposition to it can help preserve your vision for many years.

We are the first in the Republic who are ready to help you with such a study. It is based on international data and the results of scientific work carried out by the Institute’s staff together with ophthalmologists of the Republic.

Indications for molecular genetic testing:

  • Close relatives with AMD. If one of your close relatives has (or had) AMD, then there is a high probability that you have a genetic predisposition to this disease.
  • Old age and other ADM risk factors, including female gender, unhealthy lifestyle, cardiovascular diseases, obesity etc.

There are no contraindications to the study.

The molecular genetic study allows:

  • Identifying whether you have unfavorable variants of the CFH (complement factor H) and ARMS2 (a predisposition to age-related maculopathy 2) genes, which most often determine the risk of ADM development.
  • Implementing timely preventive measures and, thereby, reducing the risk of ADM development.

Testing is carried out using the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
